Position Overview

The Dean's Office in the Faculty of Nursing invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position will support the study investigators to establish, maintain and evaluate the study protocols.  It will also address shifting priorities, to ensure deadlines are met and information is accurate. The Research Assistant will also collect, manage, store, analyze and synthesize qualitative and quantitative data.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Recruits student participants and coordinates required consent form completion
  • Conducts, records and transcribes a semi-structured interview with each student participant during the course and following the course
  • Coordinates and implements co-teacher de-briefing parameters
  • Conducts content analysis of the student interview transcripts and co-teacher debriefing transcripts
  • Reviews, updates and synthesizes literature, course evaluations, assignments, and course syllabus/outline
  • Identifies, reviews and synthesizes relevant study artifacts, for example, course evaluations, and literature
  • Participates in knowledge translation activities such as the development, submission, and revision of abstracts, posters and manuscripts
  • Coordinates and prepares survey i.e. assigning codes, identifying code parameters for pre/post surveying
  • Coordinates the implementation of the survey pre-test and post-test
  • Inputs, analyzes and summarizes survey data creating necessary reports from the surveys
  • Coordinates the timely preparation of amendments to the Research Ethics Board
  • Participates in research team meetings (no responsibility for minutes)
  • Completes assigned and scheduled tasks under own initiative with limited direct supervision
  • Identifies relevant questions and concerns and directs them to the co-investigators in a timely manner
  • Maintains fidelity with protocols for the research project
  • Maintains detailed and organized project documentation e.g. filing, photocopying, scan/email documents
  • Contributes to report, abstract and manuscript preparation and knowledge translation
  • Maintains competency in skills as required by identifying own learning needs and pursuing appropriate learning activities
  • Complete expense claims on behalf of the Co-Principal Investigators

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary Degree, with preference for a Master's degree in Nursing or Education or a related field
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of nursing education and/or teaching is an asset (experience and education related to nursing education is a benefit in terms of communicating (written and verbal) about the research
  • Experience in a Research Environment preferred
  • Ability to make creative and independent decisions and possess flexibility to adapt to the changing needs of the environment
  • Highly organized and proficient at handling a significant number of tasks, duties, and activities
  • Ability to support the research team to bring the project to completion in a timely fashion
  • Ability to work with limited direct supervision, under own initiative
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Exemplary interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills
  • Technical knowledge of Microsoft Office, Survey Monkey and/or Fluid Surveys, and  a willingness to learn SLPI software
  • Experience with software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) is an asset
