The Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in Nursing with specialization in Global Perinatal Mental Health.

Job Description

The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships - Advanced Scholars (QES-AS) program aims to identify scholars showing leadership potential, and support them in acquiring world-ready research experience through a university, in collaboration with either a non-profit organization or industry. QES-AS aims to strengthen university linkages with industry, community and international partners to explore new opportunities and to better position Canadian universities in the competitive international higher education market.

The Faculty of Nursing QES Postdoctoral fellow shall undertake research in the area of Maternal and Child Health and under the QES-AS program support research such as evidence-informed perinatal mental health service in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Specifically, the QES postdoctoral fellow will be part of the “Psychosocial distress during pregnancy and pathways to preterm birth: building evidence in LMIC to guide targeted psychosocial interventions” project based in Karachi, Pakistan and funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The successful candidate will participate in all relevant facets of the project and take a leadership role in expanding the program of research (e.g., epigenetics, microbiome, gene-environment interactions including developmental origins of health and disease).  

The QES Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to work with a multidisciplinary international team of clinicians, researchers, academics, policy-decision makers to understanding the complex social, cultural, and environmental context of pregnant women in LMIC and its influence on perinatal mental issues. The QES Postdoctoral fellow will have unique opportunity to pursue team-based research activities:

  • Analyzing data
  • Modeling pathways (mediating and moderating)
  • Sensitivity analysis
  • Knowledge translation activities during and at the end-of-grant

The fellow must be willing to spend a minimum of 30% of total time in the field at the research site (e.g. Karachi).

Moreover, the QES Postdoctoral fellow will lead independent international research activities with mentorship of Dr. Shahirose S. Premji. You will assist in developing research capacity locally and/or internationally by providing guidance to graduate students, and faculty in LMIC.     

Qualifications:

  • Must have a PhD within the 3 years immediately preceding appointment
  • Propose a well-defined research study that closely aligns with the funded research project
  • Excellent communication skills, culturally competent, proven ability to work co-operatively with colleagues from a range of different disciplines, and countries
  • Strong desire to develop innovative global health program of research within the scope of perinatal mental health
  • Have a strong record of publications and previous research experience
  • Familiarity and mastery of conceptual debates in precision medicine, and precision public health, and methodological skills (qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods).
